CURATORSHIP TASK
The theme for my curatorship task is 'The Perception of Emotion through different Medium'. Since I am including different mediums that each of the artists have used, such as Photos, Books, Films, Short films and many others. All these photographers use their mediums to control the emotion of their viewers.
My Six confirmed Photographers are:
Room 1 - Nadav Kander - Gregory Crewdson
Room 2 - Linus Sandgren - Roger Deakins
Room 3 - Hannah Starkey - Alex Prager
Each these rooms has a different atmosphere, for example, Kander and Crewdson are Photographers who take documentary sequences photos, with a lot of meaning behind, but both of them leave the emotions to the individual, as that way it can mean something for everyone.
Sandgren and Deakins are both Cinematographers, who have conveyed emotion in their individual styles of shooting. On the films they have worked with, they both use long, drawing shots to capture the essence of their stories, and how they convey the characters emotions in the angles, and the movement of the camera. This is a subliminal way of creating emotion in a film, especially when there could be something being foreshadowed.
Starkey and Prager are photographers who have created a specific feel to the emotion of their pictures. Both these photographers have an incredible setup to the photos that they take, and therefore have a lot of post processing to do. Both have a filmic look to the photos, and Prager actually moved to making small short films, with the names of Elizabeth Banks, and Bryce Dallas Howard.
The link below should take you to the ever-changing multiple drafts of my Curatorship Task. It will constantly keep being updated, and this means that there will never be a finished draft, until the final one.

Shoot 1: Portraits on 35mm film.
I did a shoot on 35mm camera for a strand of my portraits section. It worked well, and I got a varying selection of photos. I ended up getting multiple photos of one person, so that I could get the varying emotions on their face. I also took one picture of some people, as it was by chance I caught them off guard. I thought that it was incredibly important that I got Genuine Reactions from the people that I was Photographs. There was some of the photos that were blurry. But I found something extremely interesting, which was when I took a photo of someone, but it was low light so the shutter speed was low. This meant that the image was prone to blur, but since I was able to catch still pictures of the people, as they were so focused on their activity, that they were in fact dead still. This allowed me to get some interesting photos where the background was blurred, but the subject wasn't, almost the opposite of Hannah Starkey's Photos.
Shoot 2: Experimental Portraits
On this shoot i decided to mix it p, and manipulate/ distort my photos before i took them. I set my Camera to use a longer shutter speed than necessary, as this way I was able to create the same the of effect that my Photographers.
In the above photo, you can see that I have accentuated all of the lines in the photo, to make it a very expressionist version of the photos of Nadav Kander, Alex Prager and Roger Deakins. There are all of the artist in my Curatorship task that didn't have editing done before, as in they shoot like a studio setting, with adequate lighting and make everything clear and seen. Here, i have taken that quiet literally. When taking the picture of the setting, I had to wait for the lighting to be as I saw it in my head. After that, I had to take the picture on the right settings, since it was on film. After i had developed and scanned the negatives, I was ready to edit. On Photoshop, since all the professionals accentuate details of the faces and settings they were in, I thought I could

final project ideas
the aim of this shoot was to get a simple picture from the portrait, both taken on film and digital, and see how they could be manipulated. i decided to manipulate these both on the computer, and by hand, both of which you can see below.
SELECTS AND EDITS
I chose these selects and edited them as I felt that they had potential to be great pieces if they were mounted in a gallery. The first picture, appeals to the child in everyone. Everyone loves a hero, and so i decided to create a hero, with all the statistics, and words that link to the whole atmosphere of the 'hero' vibe. This made me think that i could use the photo of abu, as in the news there is a lot about people of colour being under-represented in films and movies. This is why i chose him as the hero, to show people that it doesn't matter what colour you are, and that everyone can be a hero.
For Leon , i thought that it would be interesting to show the future of the world, which made me immediately think of Mad Max. This was what impacted the design of the mask on his face. A breathing mask, or something that would sustain his life, when humans have inevitably killed everything on earth. I wanted the flower in the background, to show the specific thing, the aim of life in this future world. I also added his heart to his throat, as i wanted it to symbolise how easy it will be to end the life, when he is literally wearing his heart on his throat.
For olive, i wanted it to like abu's, be symbolising the current state of the world, and how one person could represent the generation of people who all feel the same way. The small doodles around her face are there for the different things that people are arguing about in the world now. The trump hair, the fire, the guns, and others. The words are on the contours of her face, as i didn't want it to be easy to read, meaning the viewers had to move to read the powerful news headlines. The tear, was only added as when i took the photo, the subject was herself crying, so it seemed appropriate to exaggerate that.
This is what i will be doing, and it will have to border around the socio-political events in the world.

portraits
these portraits are an idea i had whilst perusing the work of tim walker. i noticed that he used props and makeup to create a message for the people viewing the photo. I decided to in a way replicate these photos. i thought that i might however, do it in photoshop. This will allow me to create a feeling of meaning. I have decided to go with images i have taken overlaid with text. they will be meaningful quotes from films that are meant to be spiritual, or have a profound meaning. here are some of the quotes i am going to use:
artist research
this photo was one that was taken by famous fashion photographer Tim Walker. It is similar to the ones i want to create, in the sense that it has something to do with the background being as much as he foreground. in this photo, the subject Lupita Nyongo is the foreground, and the other things are the background, such as the pieces of wheat, and the burnt marshmallows. they may be in the front of the subject, but they are not being focused on as much , which buts them in the viewers background.
with my images, the photo will be the background, and the text in the foreground. this means the photo behind will have to allude to the text obviously, but it will also have to have a significant issue with the subject matter of not only the quote, but the film that the quote comes from. |

‘It reminds me of that old joke- you know, a guy walks into a psychiatrist's office and says, hey doc, my brother's crazy! He thinks he's a chicken. Then the doc says, why don't you turn him in? Then the guy says, I would but I need the eggs. I guess that's how I feel about relationships. They're totally crazy, irrational, and absurd, but we keep going through it because we need the eggs’ - annie hall

FINAL PIECES
this is one of my favourite quotes from the great film 'annie hall'. this note in the film directly refers to the breakup between the two main characters. i feel like this quote, however, refers to life. it can be hard, and difficult sometimes, and won't make any sense, but the reason people get on with it is because they do it for 'the eggs'. the metaphor is that the eggs are imaginary thing that you feel like you need in order to do the thing that you are doing. in the film, the 'eggs' are a metaphor for love, and the feeling of being with another person. in life, the eggs represent love again, but also friendship, and family and friends.
---------------------------------------------
this quote is one that anyone can apply to their life. everyone has had hardships, and has gone through something bad. but they always bounce back. and that is what this quote symbolises. everyone has a very similar life structure. we are born, we live, and we die. but its the bits in the middle that matter the most. that is what makes it not an easy story to tell. everyone has theyr own story to tell, and not many other people will understand.
---------------------------------------------
i feel this quote is self explanatory, even with the picture behind it. the picture is a prime example of how the the world has rushed itself. in a way, the people are to blame for this, but the quote refers to all of the people on the planet. it is simply at its word, the planet and the people on it have rushed the world up so much that nobody really knows what it is anymore.
---------------------------------------------
this quote is about the monotony of life. the repetition of everyday tasks, for example taking pills. The tasks are extremely boring, but its the repetition of the quote gets stuck in the brain, like something that becomes a mantra. the quote however, shows the schedule of how the repetition of something can drive you insane, the colour scheme fits the quote, but shows how it can also be extremely dangerous as it will mess up your brain. in the film 'requiem for a dream' where this quote comes from, the character who creates this mantra to take the pills ends up going insane.
---------------------------------------------
the movie this is from is about reincarnation. it makes sense in the quote, but i thought that it applied to many things. it reminds me of a biblical presence, as there is people in the world who make it their sole goal to help people in this world. that everyone is here for a purpose, and they come back again and again to help people. each time, learning something new, and another way they can help people. it also seems slightly biblical, with the resurrection of christ, and how he helped people, and that people think he will come back and help again. in the movie this is from, it is the story of a dog, and its story of how it goes from lifetime to lifetime, only to return to the original owner it first had. however, to me, this quote was about one person, who helps many different people, and with every new person that they help, they learn something new about themselves, and life .
---------------------------------------------
i found this quote to have a very significant meaning after watching the film it was associated with. In the film, both of the characters have cancer, which is terminal. the boy, when he first meets the girl, puts a cigarette in his mouth, which she assumes he will smoke, which she says is 'stupid' and that he is literally giving himself more cancer. it is harsh, but true. he however, explains that he is simply putting it in his mouth, but never lighting it, to show that metaphorically he has power over the thing that is killing him. this meant a lot to me, as he is showing to everyone that not only is he not scared of the cancer, but he is willingly proving that he has control over it, which brings him and his illness into perspective. i believe this quote is very symbolic, as it proves that anyone can conquer their own fears, even if it is something that may kill them.
In this photo, i simply wanted to encapsulate the way that people view themselves, either through the camera of society, or truthfully, through their own eyes. i aspired for this picture to simply show that people can seen whatever way they want to be. I also wanted to show how even though there is people who will see you for who you really are, some people will see you through a lens. for what you look like, not who you are. I also played into the film that this comes from, wherein a man names Truman has every aspect of his life recorded, but he never knows, until he slowly figures out. In the end of the film, he looks directly into the camera. I wanted to achieve that same thing, but be taking the photo at the same time. he is not only aware boy the photo being taken, but he is manipulating the camera, almost like he is manipulating the people.
